Leigh was born in India to British parents and spent her childhood in England.

Leigh's first film in Hollywood was "Gone with the Wind" opposite Clark Gable.

She suffered from bipolar disorder and had several failed marriages. In spite of these difficulties, Leigh continued to act until her death in 1967.
